Can't log in - no default user name in dropdown menu. How to resolve?

Question

After a Windows repair the username field on the login box is empty and so is the dropdown menu and when I try to login it says please enter a user name -but I can't! It won't let me type one either.

I have tried repairing the software, uninstalling and reinstalling it, unistalling and then installing an earlier version. Updating the earlier version, but nothing makes any difference.
