I have some MP4 video files on my hard drive that I want to burn to disc so I can play them on a DVD player. What format should they be converted to (sorry if I appear to be a bit thicky)?

Firstly, you should check the manual of the DVD Player to see what are the supported file formats that it can read and play, because it's possible you don't have to convert these files to play them. Most of the DVD Players have the capability of playing the MP4 by default. However, you can use a burning application like Ashampoo Burning Studio. Open the application, insert a Blank DVD, choose DVD > DVD VIDEO Disc. Add the files, wait for process to complete then you can play the files on the DVD Player.
