The emoji support still exists even if you updated the firmware of your phone. To access them, open the SMS application and then tap on the Microphone icon and switch to the smiley. This will activate the emoji screen. To have it instead of the recording button, open the SMS application then tap to write a message. Keep the microphone tapped until you see the Settings menu. Access the menu and disable recording or voice input.
