My (very old) Epson R200 is flashing its two red lights and giving a 'communication error' signal, although the USB cable is fine. It has already been given an external waste ink tank and the reset utility for this used successfully several times. This seems to be some other problem. Is this finally the end of the road?

I'm using Windows XP. I have tried the reset utility, but it simply reports 'communication error'. Have also tried a different USB cable and a different port. Same result.

The problem is that the printer can't communicate with the computer and so the "communication error" appears. You should remove the drivers and all the software your printer has then use a tool like CCleaner to clean the old registry files and drivers that are associated to the device. After uninstalling the printer, open CCleaner, go to Registry tab on the left and use the Analyze button then "Fix Selected issues". Perform a restart of the computer and then install its drivers and software and eventually use the SCC application and perform a reset counter. Communication error problem should disappear if the printer is installed correctly.
