An error occurred in when I try to save to .xls format. The error code is -1004. How do I fix this?

This seems to be an internal error because there is no information about it. If you're using Windows Vista or higher, make sure to run the application as Administrator. If it's a file permission, the application should be able to save the file correctly. Additionally, make sure the file is not opened in your local XLS viewer/editor.
