Error 646 is directly related to the AppData folder that is improperly defined in the registry database of your computer. Microsoft was aware of this problem and issued a fix for it.

Go to Start > Run and type regedit then navigate to the following key:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

The AppData path should look like: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

Double click to change it and then perform another update attempt. If the error persists repeat the same procedure for the following keys in the registry editor:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

After there fixes, everything should be back to normal.

To fix the problem automatically(Much easier way)

Download the following file:

Click to download microsoft Fixit software.
enter image description here

In the File Download dialog box, click Run, and then follow the steps in the wizard.

Note

The Microsoft Fix it wizard might be in English only, but the Fix it
works for all language versions of Windows.

I don't recommend you to update automatically. It is very frustrated when you use the computer and the automatic update will slow down the PC speed.

My computer runs Windows 7 and I would give you the method of 7 OS. Hope it can help you.
1. Open control panel.
2. Click on System and Security. (This option can be viewed when the options are viewed by category)
3. Click on Windows Update. And there will list several options at the left column.
4. Select Change settings in the left column.
5. You can select the way how windows install the update by checking over the drop-down options after you click the tab beside the shield icon.
Last step: Click OK to save all settings.
