I currently own a Alcatel 991 Touch whose firmware is Android 2.3.6. I think this can be updated up to 2.8.0, but I'm not quite sure. Is this possible? If yes, how can I do that? And will my data be lost?

There is no official information that will confirm your statement. However, you can search for available firmware updates for your phone by going to Settings > About > Software Update > Update. Before you do this, it's advised to have your phone charged to 85% and use a stable Internet connection. You can also update your phone's firmware by using the official tool that you can download from the official website.

Before you proceed with the upgrading process, it's advised to back up your data. Depending on the available updates, your data could or could not be lost (if it's an important update, your data will be lost), so it's better to be cautious.
