Compatibility of different Skype versions.

I've just had a new computer installed with the latest version of Skype 3.8.0.188, but now I have problems with video contact to my son in Japan, who has version 3.8.0.139. I can see him on video (but not myself on screen display) and at his end, he can't see me. Is this due to the differing version 188/139?

No, the problem is not the version number of the Skype software. As you can see that it's just a minor build of the application. The problem is actually related to your and his Internet connection. Try to close all the background applications and turn off torrent or any download managers, then attempt a new video chatting session. Additionally, both upgrade Skype to its latest version.
