DVD Burning to play on TV and DVD Player

I'm using Windows XP and an LG burning tool. It burns as it should but it will not play on the TV via the DVD player. What am I doing wrong?

The error is related to compatibility. Please check the supported file types and methods used by your DVD player. You will need to convert an AVI/MKV/MPEG file to DVD first.
