How to carry out a work of master's thesis?

Good morning, i'm using the Elselect flowmeter to carry out a work of master's thesis. When i link the flowmeters with my PC using a cable RS232 and an adapter RS232/USB, the software FlowDDE don't make the linked. It says INTERFACE:NOT ACTIVE.
I hope that you will answer because this work is very important for me.
