The colors might help you increase the contrast between the text and the background, but that's pretty much about it. If you use colors as background it will put an additional strain to your eyes to distinguish elements and text, therefore I don't recommend using it.
Always work on your PC with natural light, a white background and black text. I just tried adding a colorful background in Microsoft Word and it was horrible. I barely could stare at the screen.
