How do you change the color of the background?

I've installed SmoothDraw, but there was no way to change the background color automatically. You have to select Background Layer and then use a brush to colorize it. Once this process is completed, go the left side and create a new layer where you can draw and perform the operations you need.

There is no other way to choose the color of the background layer.
