I've looked on Reddit and other websites where Snapchat is actively discussed, and it appears this is an error with the application. There were mixed opinions about the functionality of the service. For most users, the fix was - actually reinstall the application.
Make sure you know all the login credentials and then remove the app from your mobile device. Reinstall it and it should work again without issues.
