You can't replace the software on the stick if the storage is protected. The format option won't work, and if you try to use any other partition tools, you might brick the device by deleting important files needed to function properly.
However, these devices have a storage option that can be used to store other files. Place the updated package in that location and then you plug it next time on a computer and the old software installation start, cancel it and use the other one instead.
