The reason you can't maintain a file/object association for an application is because the software wasn't launched with Administrator access. After you set something, the software will add the settings to a file or in the registry. It should have given you errors when this operation failed to complete. My advice is to restart the application, but this time, right-click the desktop icon and choose Run as Administrator. Of course, you need a user with Administrator access.
