The Recent option is activated only when you begin chatting with someone or when someone sends you snaps. This is a feature known as "Frequent Chats". It’s available in most of the IM clients available for mobile devices. It's nothing you should worry about. The application creates the Recent category to make it easier to reach the people you chat with.
