To be able to add subtitles, you will need to make sure that they are saved in the SRT file format and encoded using UTF-8. You can perform a simple conversion using Notepad. If you have the subtitles, open Notepad and load it using File > Open then use the same menu, File > Save as and choose the Encoding as UTF-8 next to the Save button. Once the subtitles have been converted, place them into the same folder with the movie file and rename it. Open the converter and add the video file then you'll be able to select the subtitle. Make sure to keep the UTF-8 encoding in its place, or the subtitles may not be visible.
