The application is required to be installed on your laptop because it provides support for hotkeys. With the help of the application, there will be the possibility to customize some of these keys. It also provides on-screen notification for the keys you press (volume indicator, wireless/Bluetooth/network availability, screen brightness,etc). Even if the software won't be installed, the buttons will work normally, only that you will miss a few customization options and on-screen notifications.
