The solution is to check your sound settings, especially the microphone part. Go to the System Tray and double click the speaker associated with your sound card then switch to recording tap. Double click the pink input and choose microphone and make sure it's plugged in. Raise the volume then restart the application used to chat. Additionally, check its configuration settings for Audio/Recording and select the proper device.
