Is there a way to overcome this?

According to the official website of the product, this isn't developed to run on Windows 8. However, there are several things that you can do to overcome the error mentioned. Because this is an old program, and it didn't received any updates for newer OS, you should run it using compatibility troubleshooter. To use this, swipe from the right side of the screen and in the search bar type : Compatibility Troubleshooter. Open the resulted service and follow its instruction. It might be a good idea to perform an update for the program's version and also, a fresh installation. Moreover, download and use ShellExView. This tool will stop all non-related Windows services.
