I suggest you to use Devanāgarī-QWERTY application. It is free, easy to use and available for Mac and Windows. You can find it on the official web page where you also have the installation instructions. Another application with the same features is Sarasvati developed by Stefan Webb. It is also free, but compatible only with old Windows operating systems.
