While using Chrome, sometimes when I click on a link, it takes me to an advertisement, gaming, or music page that is not at all related to the link URL. Is there some sort of malware or other program that is doing this?

No. This is not the case for a malware or other program. Some websites are developed in this way so the beneficiary could earn money from advertising. If you would use any other browser, the same behavior would be encountered. You can stop the advertising pages to open by using an extension like AdBlock. To install it, visit the Chrome webstore.
