There are tutorials you can use to model your cylindrical specimen. I recommend checking the tutorials on Google. I have found videos explaining how to extrude a model. Basically, you have to create a circle, then Extrude it as long as you want. To create a hole, create another circle on the base circle and place it in the middle. Use CUT then continue through the extruded axis.
