I need to place a linkable button in a PDF file. I've never done this before. I use Mac with Mavericks. What program do I need to use for this?

This can be done using a Standard version of Adobe Acrobat or higher. However, you need a registered version. To create a link button / text, just open the program, go to Tools > Advanced Editing > Link tool. Draw a box arround the text you want to create the link and further options will become available. You will be able to choose what kind of link do you want to create (in-document, web URL), link colors and more.
