Why my Android homescreen remains dark after theme or wallpaper change?

That's because of the automatic brightness. Go to Menu > Settings > Display and adjust automatic brightness. If you have problems with the OS, try resetting the phone to the Factory Defaults from Menu > Settings > Privacy.
