Downloading material from Internet

When I download a movie, music etc. from an Internet site where you have to sign in, I receive it. But when I go to open it, there's text in some foreign language, and I can't download the movie or music. This happens EVERY time. And VLC always says that the .rar I downloaded is NOT supported and can not be fixed. So I have a bunch of movies & music which I can't download or even just watch.
Sorry about being so wordy, I am really kind of new. I just got a desktop iMac which was upgraded to OSX Lion.

Sounds this might be a rather sketchy site...
Files with extension .rar are compressed files and should be opened with Stuffit Expander or a similar application. Also, if you have Norton installed, it won't let you download them if you have vulnerability protection activated.
