Quicktime might need codecs in order to play AVI files. Try to use VLC which is available Mac to play all the video formats you have. Getting to play AVI files with Quicktime can be a waste of time because it's a little complicated than Windows and having VLC as your primary video player is the easiest way to achieve this.
