Check the cables and the drivers. If the drivers are not installed, use the model of the scanner and paste it into Google by adding HP_PRODUCT drivers then download the drivers for your version of Mac because you will need to use drivers based on the Mac OS version installed. Alternatively, search for drivers directly on HP Support.
