By default Teamviewer updates itself by prompting you to take action every time the computer is opened. This means that if there is an update, it will prompt you to update. All your settings will remain the same, only important files will be updated. Additionally, go to Help > Check for Updates or if there is already a new one, click the down arrow next to the Help menu.
