I have Adobe Acrobat 6 Professional and Adobe Reader X. However, when I receive an Adobe file the A6 always responds and if the file was compiled using a later version it will not open it. How can I ensure the when receiving files the Reader always responds?

Try to set Adobe Reader as default PDF viewer. You can't set them both to differentiate the files. It's going to be one or another. Just make Adobe Reader X as default PDF viewer and every time need to use Adobe 6 Professional, select the manual way to open a file using File > Open.
