If you want to upgrade your computer's OS from Windows XP to Windows Vista, you do not need to format your computer. However, if you do not format your C:/ drive ( where usually the OS is installed ) you will have 2 Operating Systems on your machine. It is advised, that before you install a new Operating System on a computer, you need to format the C:/ drive, so the new OS should be installed on a fresh drive.
