Can you tell me if this software is reliable?

Can you tell me how this software works and how much I can rely on it? What is its main function in the computer? And, lastly, don't you have a free version for a trial before I can purchase the one I want?

Windows Defender is an antivirus solution for your computer. If you have a licensed version of Windows, this application is free. It comes bundled with Windows Vista and higher. Its effectiveness is somewhere 70-80 % of the total infections tested. It's a good solution and it's extremely easy to use.
