Run your Disk Check
Click Start
Click Run
Type CHKDSK in searchbar
Click OK and run the program
Sometimes running this program will retrieve a lost OS file. You faced such type of file problem in your firefox installation also. Use a good registry cleaner too... If this doesn't work re-install your OS properly...

If you can't update the program, I recommend you download and install the updates manually. You can find them on Microsoft website. Firstly, right-click the Computer icon, select Properties and check the architecture of your OS. If the computer is on 32bit, download the 32bit version of the update and if it is on 64bit, download and install the 64bit version. If you still have problems, try contacting Microsoft.
