In order to solve the XML error received from Football Manager 2009 you need to right-click on the game icon, to select Properties and to add reset_preferences after fm.exe in the Target field. After you launch the game, you can remove the command. If this doesn't help, I suggest you to delete the Settings folder from the installation directory.
