The Open Office Suite got an excellent help feature - press F1 and type "page numbers" and voilà!. You can insert the current page number anywhere you like (Insert > Fields > Page Number). If you insert it in a header (Format > Page ... > Header > Header On) or footer (Format > Page ... > Footer > Footer On) it will be repeated on every page.

OpenOffice uses fields to format and operate page numbers. Move your cursor where you want to insert a page number (header or footer) and go to Insert > Fields > Page Number. The gray background around the page number is a field. You can find more information about OpenOffice page numbering from the official user manual.
