In order to fix the issue, go to Start, type dxdiag and open the utility. Click the Sound tab, check your sound card model and download and install the latest drivers available from the developer web page. Also, make sure you're using a high quality microphone. If you're using another recording device, makes sure that it is correctly enabled and configured (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback). Also, try to run the Fix It provided by Microsoft. If you're recording using Windows Sound Recorder, check the troubleshooting guide provided by the Support Team. If not, uninstall and reinstall the recording software, or use another one from Software Informer database.
