YTD works just fine for me even when I use it in free mode. It downloads the video file allowing you select the best quality for the video in question. If you have problems downloading, please obtain a new version from its main website.

On the other hand, please check your firewall so that YTD can connect to YouTube to download videos.

Maybe you should try another software when Youtube Downloader keeps failing in downloading videos. I am using Any Video Converter Free, a very good freeware for downloading youtube videos. And you are allowed to select the format and size of the videos you are going to download. It has Mac version if you are Mac user.
