I used Verizon Wireless Software on my Samsung Intensity II and it froze completely.

I plugged my Samsung Intensity II into my laptop and Verizon Wireless Software Upgrade popped up saying it needs an upgrade. I clicked this and it failed and now it won't register it and leave the black and white screen on my phone.

You should not have performed the update. The official way of updating Samsung phone is through Kies or using the instructions from the official website. I believe your phone is bricked and you will need to take it to the service shop. They will replace it because the software used was theirs in the first place.
