Following a tutorial closely once (in my experience) and then reproducing a similar concept by yourself is a very good practise. This will help to cement the concepts in your mind and allow you to make a connection between the action you take and the visual result you get. Of course, you'll need to refer to it from time to time, but try to make a habit of applying what you've learned soon after learning it. Finally, have fun and try to make something on a regular basis. As with any new skill, repetition and familiarity are essential.
