Trying to download a game using Google Play and it keeps popping up a message saying "error code 498". What does that mean?

I get the same error (498 ) when I try to download Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Space. I have a Samsung Galaxy S. I contacted the Google Play store or whatever it's called. Their response was this:

Thanks for writing in. It looks like the apps you're trying to download is 38.2M and 35.5M, which is larger than your device's cache partition. Your device is unable to download apps on Google Play that are larger than the cache partition even though you may have enough internal storage space available. Any app larger than 20-25M is too big for certain devices, namely Samsung devices, to download at one time.

It's very disappointing. I hope they come up with some way around it.

I JUST TRIED TO TALK TO SOMEONE AT SAMSUNG ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, AND THE GUY WAS A TOTAL JERK. told me that it wasn't their problem. i asked him to read this page, sent him a link to it and he wouldn't even open it. said he's not allowed. i asked him to forward our issues to a supervisor and he told me that he doesn't have one. i kept a copy of our conversation. i gave him a terrible rating on the online survey but i doubt it will do any good.

So I have LG Opitmus Slider from Virgin Mobile & I'm having this problem too. & I've already done the whole uninstall updates & reinstall stuff. It worked for a couple updates I needed, but now I'm trying to download Instagram (I've had it on my phone before. But deleted for various reasons.) & Its giving me the Error 498 popup. Please help me? :(

I got this error and I was not able to save images to my device from the web nor could I install apps simply because it looked like the downloads would never start .

power cycled device after each new remedy I tried .

I cleared my cache and followed other similar instructions I found on the net . didn't fix the downloads not starting issue , same error 498 :/

I tried stopping a certain service like google play or somethin in the task manager like that and that made so I couldn't even get back in to google play even after power cycles .

probably could have just updated but I didn't feel like doing that so I just factory reset phone , everything was fine after that so I felt like the problem was my device ( client side error ) not google ( server side )

I hope this helps some soul out there

Error "(498)" can be caused as a result of adjusting or altering ( background and/or foreground ) data usage settings on your device, if so, try reversing the changes. It can also occur if certain GooglePlay related (obviously related or ambiguously related) applications and/or processes are "Disabled" by the user, once again to fix this simply try reversing the changes.

Lots of different answers here. Clear cache daily using an app for it also wait a few seconds then try install again. If this doesn't help then deleting data on the play store might instead of uninstalling it. You do that in app manager. This error is normally caused because you've had that app before and your phone still has leftover data from it. Wi-Fi has nothing to do with it and neither does size.

this should solve the problem extend your memory by buying an sd card this is the first solution and the easy one >>>>> the other solution Just use another store I used myself mobo market >>>download it by use the normal browser install the package >>>>if you have problems installing it just go to settings/applications and check the unknown sources and try again now u can use your browser to download whatsapp and viber etc... just go for example to whatapp.com and download it like you download any app at your home pc

Ok, After trying out all the options mentioned by the users here, I found a different solution on my new Lenovo A269i. The phone inherently has a "very" low internal space which generally does not support downloads of most apps.
I got a new SD card with a few GB of space and then started using the downloads.
It works like a charm now!
:)

For all those who are wondering why the 498 error pops up on their Android, please try the above solution as well.

All the best!
