How to Avoid Memory Access Violation and ExifToolGUI Crashing

asked by about ExifToolGUI

I just downloaded and installed this into Windows 10 Pro. I like the concept of being able to edit EXIF data in a GUI rather than a command line. Unfortunately, no matter where I place the ExifToolGUI executable (C-root, C\Windows, C:\Windows\ProgramFiles\ExifTool, etc.) I get access violation error messages in module "ExifToolGUI.exe', at read address 0000001C and another access violation at address 75aCD879 in module 'shell32.dll Read of address 09640070. Subsequent to the error messages, the GUI loads, but after attempting to drill down into a subdirectory of media files, ExifToolGUI either crashes and hangs or crashes and shuts down. The much older one seems to work OK.

It appears that you are experiencing memory access violation errors and crashes with ExifToolGUI on Windows 10 Pro. Unfortunately, without further information or access to your system, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the issue. However, here are a few general suggestions you can try:

  1. Ensure you have downloaded the latest version of ExifToolGUI compatible with your operating system.
  2. Check if there are any compatibility issues with other software or dependencies installed on your system.
  3. Try running ExifToolGUI with administrative privileges (right-click the executable and select "Run as administrator").
  4. Temporarily disable any antivirus or security software to see if it is causing conflicts.
  5. Consider reaching out to the developer or checking their support resources for any known issues or troubleshooting steps specific to ExifToolGUI.
