Help with Silent Hunter 3 game.

I have Windows 8.1 and my silent hunter 3 game will not work and says, "This application can be launched with a release version of windows 95/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003 only." Can this be patched to make the game work?

This game is very old but there are enthusiasts out there are still play it for old times sake. I've found a forum where all the troubleshooting and fixing is done and arranged in one thread to make it easier for people who have issues to simply play the game normally.
