For each HP printer, the cartridges have only one position in their slot. If you put it in other way that is actually meant to be fit in, the printer will display errors or you'll break some plastic holds. However, the cause for cartridge identification failure can be directly related to the cartridge failure as well. Try using a replacement and add it to the printer to confirm this theory.
Another possibility is that the printer might have faulty issues and needs service repairs.
