The 500GB external back up drive is full.

I am using the free version of Acronis True Image 2016, and I need to remove old backup files. Do I need to buy ATI Management Console to accomplish this? If not, what do I need to do? I read that I can't use Windows Explorer.

There is absolutely no need to buy or use another application to delete the backups as they're stored in an older form of TIB file formats. Simply select the backup that you need to delete, and that's it. To check the contents of the backup, double click it on a PC where Acronis TrueImage is installed.

Use Shift + delete after you've selected the file.
