I have tried several times to sync ripped MP3 files from a desktop to my Moto G (2nd Gen) phone. I'm doing this through Windows Media Player. It says "Sync finished," but the files never show up on my phone. These are audiobook CDs from the library. Will this device manager help me do this?

The Motorola Device Manager contains software and drivers that allow you to connect the MOTO G to the PC through a USB cable. I wouldn't recommend syncing any kind of file using Windows Media Player because it won't do it properly. Install the Motorola Device Manager, then connect the phone to PC through USB and enable Storage. Go to My Computer/Computer and browse your phone. Choose one of the available storage devices (in case you are using an SD card), create a folder and paste the music there.
