Is there any way of installing an MP3 player on this phone (internal storage is 10MB) or putting a player on the external and playing from that? Firmware update?

No, there is no way of installing an MP3 player on the phone because it's using a proprietary system and because it has no Java support at least. According to the specs provided by GSMArena, the phone does have an internal player: MP3/WAV/AAC+ player which can be used to play MP3 files.
