Different types of snaps on Snapchat

Question

I am fairly new to Snapchat and noticed that sometimes when I look at recent stories from my friends some of the snaps are different. Some stay for 24 hours and some once you open them and watch them they don't stay for 24 hours, but they give you the options to message the person who sent it. Why is that?

Everything you send on Snapchat can be considered as a snap regardless if it's an audio, image, story etc. Stories are usually shared among friends and can be seen by the friends of the poster. Snaps are sent and viewed by the friend you're chatting with. This is how the Snapchat application works.
