I have tried many things, but I can't seem to find out how to use my custom fonts on Mac OS X 10.5.8.

Starting with Mac OS X 10.3 and higher, simply double click the font file and Fontbook will open a preview of the font. After this procedure, simply click Install font and the font will be installed by the operating system. You can open a text editor and select your font, then you can type and test the output.

Additionally, you can place the font manually in the following folder: /Users/Your_Username_Here/Library/Fonts.
