What do the numbers in the corner of each photo mean?

There is a number in an orange circle at the top right-hand corner of every photo. What does this mean?

I have installed the application and added some sample photos, then I selected some of them. The number in the circle that appears on the upper-right area shows how many photos are currently selected. You can see below an image with the example.

As you can see, there are 3 images selected.
