In most of the cases, you need to append the equal = inside the cell before you can type the formula, something like this: =SUM(A1:A10). If the equal sign is missing, Excel, or any other spreadsheet editor won't know what you're typing in that cell. By appending the equal sign, you tell the application, that you have a formula with elements that needs to be solved.
